Kaya and Pottery/Native American Crafts

As soon as I heard about CurrClick's American Girl Club I signed up my youngest daughter. She has an American Girl doll and has already enjoyed reading many of the books. I like they way they incorporate American history into each story. This club had a class with a webinar discussion and an easy craft. The instructor e-mailed necessary supplies and even a snack idea ahead of time; thankfully we had everything at home.
Kaya and Lone Dog was the book discussed today. The girls were instructed to read the book prior to the class. The teacher shared discussion questions for each chapter as well as highlights from the story. We had a guest with us, and Joseph wanted to do the snacks and crafts, too. All of the kids gathered around the computer and listened about a pure heart and making the right choices.
There were a few pauses in the presentation and my two youngest viewers chose to go play until craft time, but Emily enjoyed the discussion. Pictures of wigwams, tepees, longhouses, and adobe houses were shared as well as an explanation of Kaya's movable tepee house.
Watching the kids make their decorated buffalo hide (paper bag) craft reminded me of the kids decorating pottery at the Sioux Pottery shop in Rapid City. This teacher also shared some of the Native American pictograph symbols which they could use to decorate their crafts.

At the end of the class she shared this You-tube video of easy corn husk dolls. We plan to make these, and I'll share pictures when we do.

  7. The pottery is great. Making something with your hands really leaves an impression on you. I bet the kids REALLY enjoyed making their own pieces.
