Mulberry Summer

This month we are all sharing about The Great Outdoors. The rain came down at the beginning of the month, and we all enjoyed a few days staying inside reading as our library summer reading program kicked off. The mud puddles are finally drying up, and we are enjoying the great outdoors early in the morning and late in the evening. Mid-day here in Louisiana is already hot, hot, hot. This summer for us has been filled with berries. Right now we are harvesting blueberries, but earlier this month we picked buckets filled with mulberries. It seemed perfectly fitting to me to include a favorite Dr. Seuss book this month: And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. (Affiliate link)

This was the first book written by Dr. Seuss, and it was written over 75 years ago.

Sometimes I have my son read aloud books that are a bit below his reading level. He is able to read them easily, so he can add expression to the stories as he reads to us. After reading this one, we pulled a few other favorite Dr. Seuss books from his shelf to enjoy together.

I found several websites including seussville.com
Are you ever too big for Dr. Seuss books? I think not! I found these "Seuss spa day" ideas  that even my teenage daughters could join in.

We had fun trying a recipe that paired with our folktale last month, so I have two special mulberry recipes this month.

Mulberry Lemonade:

This is quite simple. Pour about 1/8 cup mulberry juice in the bottom of a clear glass. Fill with ice cubes, then gently pour in lemonade. My daughter prefers pink lemonade which looks pretty with the dark purple juice. Enjoy!

Mulberry Sorbet:

Make a sweet fruit syrup by cooking 3 cups of berries in 1 cup of water, mashing as they gently simmer. Strain. Add 1/2 cup of sugar to juice and stir until completely dissolved. Chill. Pour over ice in blender and blend until all ice chunks are ground. A trick I learned from Trim Healthy Mama: you can also add a tablespoon of glucomannan powder while blending which can help the texture be even smoother. See it on Instagram.

We also enjoyed homemade buttermilk scones with mulberry jelly.
