Seed Sowers: Gospel Planting Adventures

The following is a book review for Seed Sowers from Grace & Truth Books completed with the TOS Schoolhouse Review Crew.

In the Tzeltal language, there is a single word for our two English words believe and obey. In one of the true stories in her book, Gwen Toliver shared of the missionary Marianna Slocum who despite horrible loss followed her fiancé's vision for the Tezltal Indians. She continued to believe and obey as she shared Jesus Christ's love with the people she served. She continued serving there for over 20 years, and today there are more than 300 Christian congregations in that area.

I love hearing about the life work of missionaries such as the one mentioned above. This book is filled with stories of love, sacrifices, and adventures of the missionaries that the author got to know through her work at Wycliffe's Linguistic Center. Gwyn Toliver is a homeschooling mom of eight children and in addition to her family's work at Wycliffe, she also serves on the TOS Schoolhouse Review Crew.

Our family has read the chapters from this book both out loud together and quietly on our own. Each of us has found different parts meaningful. True life adventures that even included canibals captured my nine year old son's attention. Other stories showed how God was working in circumstances that clearly reveal His hand when looking back.

Pronunciation tips that are included helped us when reading names of people groups, many which we had never heard of before. Others were familiar, and at times missionaries we had read about in the past were mentioned (including Cameron Townsend.) In one of the appendixes, the author shared about Bible translation being completed in people's heart languages and the need for that work to continue. I've been hearing more and more references to "heart language" and I love the works shared in this book about bringing that reality to more and more people.

This is not just a book for homeschoolers. Anyone who appreciates true stories of missionary adventures will enjoy reading this book. In addition to the stories from missionaries past, since these were written from first hand interviews updates are often shared, too.

This paperback book (available from Grace & Truth books for $12.50) is filled with life changing true stories. It is also available for kindle and in paperback and hardcover.

  1. Jennifer, I can't wait to get my hands on this book- my third-born, Hannah, devours missionary stories. She'll be delighted with a new one to add to her collection. Thanks for the recommendation (and for stopping by the Overflow yesterday!)
