TOS Review: Peter and the Wolf

Maestro Classics has shared another hit. Their Peter and the Wolf CD ($16.98) has been requested repeatedly by my son since we received it.

This Stories in Music production includes a beautiful performance by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. That alone is enjoyable to listen to, but this little package includes much more. Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev is conducted by Stephen Simon and narrated by Yadu.

As you listen to the entire CD, you receive an education in the history of the composer as well as a thorough explanation of the instruments and the “roles” that they play. My favorite part was listening to the music, but a very close second was the detailed story of the composer’s life and how he wrote this piece.
Also included in this package is a small (CD package size) 23 page full color booklet filled with activities, facts, and pictures. The activities range from dot to dot drawing to more complex “mirror writing” and crack the code tasks. There is even a small portion of the arrangement of Peter’s Tune for us to try to play. Three less common instruments: the balalaika, bayan, and domra each have a page with pictures and descriptions.

Disclaimer: A copy of this CD was provided for my family to use for the purpose of this review.
