The Christian Parenting Handbook ~ Review and Giveaway!

For this review, I received an advanced digital copy of this book which I've been reading on my iPad. Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller have co-authored an amazing resource that I will continue to refer to. There are so many nuggets of wisdom shared for parents.
"We’re not saying behavior modification is wrong. We’re just suggesting that it’s incomplete and, in the end, lacks the depth for long-term and lasting change."

The authors share how focusing on heart issues is so much deeper than simply focusing on behavior.
"Parents who simply use behavior modification often end up with kids who look good on the outside while having significant problems on the inside. Consistency can teach kids to appear good, clean, and nice, but to help them change their hearts, other parenting skills must be added to the picture. Because you believe that God has created your child with a heart, you have access to an additional barrel of parenting strategies."
I found myself finding so much to highlight; there are so many lessons that I needed to learn in his resource.
"Embrace a heart-based approach to parenting and you’ll see lasting change in your children."
The chapter about building internal motivation as opposed to the "what's in it for me?" mentality challenged me.
"It’s interesting to see that many of the misbehaviors that a child presents can be boiled down to a few character weaknesses. The job of parenting becomes more focused as parents are able to target specific heart qualities and require changes that adjust the patterns their children have developed."

Guidance for how to change our parenting is shared:
"I can see you’re angry because I said no. I’d like you to take a break for a bit and settle your heart down and when you’re ready, come back and we’ll talk about it.”
and:
"After a correction time, whenever possible, go back to the offense and prac- tice doing it the right way. You might say, “I was standing about here, and you were right there, and you go ahead and ask me for a snack again. I’ll say no, and you show me how to respond the right way based on what we’ve talked about.”"

The subtitle is 50 Heart-Based Strategies For All The Stages Of Your Child's Life. Some of these nuggets of wisdom include "The Difference Between Punishment And Discipline" and "How To Pray For Your Kids." This is such a valuable resource. Advice is backed up by Scripture pointing out truths to help us become better parents.

"Your Primary Responsibility" reminds us that a parent's most important job is training our children to be disciples of Jesus Christ. The authors share about positively using God's Word while parenting, not just as a way of correcting them which can give them a wrong idea about God.
"The message you are teaching your children is that the Bible is exciting and relevant for their lives. The message, in their own language, will last forever."
That sums it up, but there is so much more. Read it for yourself, then come back and tell me your favorite quote from the book.

  1. Behavior modification is often a disaster at our house so I would love to learn a new approach.

  2. Great review, Jenny. I love the way you used quotes from the book. Let me share personally for a moment. This heart-based approach has been revolutionary in my life. It’s helped me as a father, husband, leader, supervisor, coach, and in other areas. Behavior modification is effective if your only desire is to get your children to act a certain way. If you want to shape their character, you need to work on the level of the heart. My sons are both adults now and they are fine young men of good character. We consistently focused on the character quality of honoring others in our family! We returned home from vacation in December to find our whole house cleaned and a Christmas tree in place in the corner of the living room. Now that’s honor! This is just one example of the great insights from this special book.
