Movie Review: Warriors of Honor by New Liberty Videos

The following DVD was provided by New Liberty Videos for the purpose of this TOS Schoolhouse Crew review.

My children have been learning about American history this year, so these New Liberty Videos fit well with our lessons. We received the DVD Warriors of Honor which is about "The Faith and Legacies of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson."

Each of the DVDs from New Liberty Videos are $19.95. Much different than a traditional movie, instead of watching this 80 minute American history documentary Warriors of Honor straight through at one sitting, we split it into several sessions.

Warriors of Honor focuses on two key Christian leaders during the Civil War. "Both were masterful generals, brilliant strategists, and above all faithful Christians. The faith of these 'Warriors of Honor' governed their lives on and off the battlefield, and their legacies continue even today." As well as details about the war, details about the lives of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are provided in this Civil War documentary. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson who owned slaves in Virginia started Sunday school classes for them.

"Duty is ours: consequences are God's." Stonewall Jackson

This is not a dramatized movie about the war and is not light viewing. Unrated, Warriors of Honor is designed for a general audience, and my ten year old son watched it with us as well as my high school daughters, though I'm sure that he will better understand some of the content when he is older. The causes and major battles of the Civil War are presented but the main focus is the two Confederate Generals. Reinactment videos are shown, but the majority of this documentary is narration with historic photographs.

"They do not know what they say. If it came to a conflict of arms, the war will last at least four years. Northern politicians will not appreciate the determination and pluck of the South, and Southern politicians do not appreciate the numbers, resources, and patient perseverance of the North. Both sides forget that we are all Americans. I foresee that our country will pass through a terrible ordeal, a necessary expiation, perhaps, for our national sins." Robert E. Lee

From the reinactments and annual spring pilgrimage in Natchez, MS to the antebellum homes throughout Louisiana, living history field trips are often a part of our homeschool experience. As was revealed at one of our recent tours, history that is shared at such exhibits is not always accurate. I appreciate the truths of our Christian heritage that are evident in this film.

This American history documentary is now part of our homeschool resource library. I'd like to add more titles from New Liberty Videos.

New Liberty Videos Christian DVDs are made by Brian Barkley. After working in Hollywood editing television series, he became a follower of Jesus Christ while making a prison documentary. He has spent the last 30 years producing Christian movies in Kansas.
