Magnolia Mound Plantation ~ a Louisiana Field Trip

A friend and her mom joined the kids, me, and my mom for a delightful day in downtown Baton Rouge. We met for lunch. My Dad suggested Harrington's Cafe and it was the best restaurant I've been to in a long time. I had crawfish pie, spinach Madeline, and fresh fruit. My mom ordered their rich shrimp and corn soup with a salad and bread stick. Everyone else had the same food with different sides. Take the time to go there if you visit Baton Rouge.

Our main destination for the afternoon was Magnolia Mound Plantation. We explored the grounds on our own, then went on an hour long guided tour through the house and open hearth kitchen.

No pictures were allowed inside, but the guide's stories captured our interest. She showed us the locked cabinet where spices were kept. Each day the lady of the house would take out just the amount needed to season their food. The box resembled a hat box. If you have the opportunity, spend an afternoon there.
