BrainFood Learning ~ Fascinating World of Birds DVD

The following is a review of the Fascinating World of Birds DVD by BrainFood Learning as a part of the TOS Schoolhouse Review Crew.

Suitable for all ages, the Fascinating World of Birds DVD is available for $14.99 plus shipping. Science, math, language, and culture are incorporated into each of the DVDs in this series. Science vocabulary is part of the narration including vertebrates, warm blooded, hollow bones, and much more.

Multiple birds are discussed as videos demonstrate the information. In just the small segment about hummingbirds, for example, how they eat, rest, and fly is shared. A close up view of their tiny cup shaped nest is amazing. Spider silk allows the nest to expand! Metabolism is the focused term about hummingbirds, and it is explained clearly with the bird example.

Some of the other highlighted terms include depth perception, plumage, and brood. Your child might decide that they want to become an ornithologist.

Here is a preview:

My son and I watched the documentary together and discussed the birds and new facts learned. Woodpeckers, the American robin, Canadian geese, and even the Louisiana Brown pelican are just some of the birds featured on this DVD. My sons favorite was the mccaw. He liked it's bright colors and especially learning that it could make a sound as loud as a chainsaw. Penguins are my favorite bird, so I was happy to see them featured.

This DVD (as well as the others in this series) has a corresponding downloadable lesson plan available on the website. Worksheets and activities are based on the video. The video ends with a four-part review. Birds, features of birds, bird facts, and "big words" are all reviewed to help viewers learn the facts that were shared. Can you identify birds from  pictures? The review gives you a chance to try just that. Do you know which bird builds the largest nest of any bird in North America? We look for one every time we cross the long bridge to New Orleans.
