USAopoly Games: A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Our family loves playing games, so this review was pure fun. USAopoly sent not one but two of their games to us: Wonky: The Crazy Cubes Card Game and Tapple: Fast Word Fun For Everyone. Both of these were fairly quick (20 minutes or less) to play, and we played them both over and over.

First let me tell you about Wonky. These blocks are not your typical cubes. Three sides are flat and three are uneven, and none of the flat sides are across from each other. There are 3 colors and 3 sizes of each wonky sided block, so they can be used in addition to the game for grouping and matching. As an Occupational Therapist, I've used stacking games for years in therapy. Kids with fine motor delays can struggle to stack blocks of various sizes. With my tremor, stacking the wonky shaped blocks has not been easy. My highest tower was just five blocks. We have laughed so much with this game. Wonky would be a great addition to an OT clinic as EVERYONE has trouble stacking these blocks, so there is an equal chance at the game. It turns into a toppled tower often--that's the point. Laughter has a way of easing frustration and allieviating tension.

Laughter just seemed to be built into this game. The game includes the nine wonky shaped blocks, playing cards which direct the building, and instructions. The box can even be used as a building platform if you happen to agree to play an unplanned game while sitting on soft cushions. ;)

Tapple was our other family game night addition, but it was played by friends in our homeschool co-op, too. Tapple is a timed game which adds to the excitement. The game is passed from person to person with the timer reactivated with each pass. If you can't think of a word before your time ends, it beeps. Difficulty increases as the round progresses and fewer letters are left to use.

Tapple is a word game that includes the "Tapple wheel" and a small set of two sided cards. The cards provide categories, then you try to beat the timer and come up with words for each letter on the wheel. Talk about words on the tip of your tongue. The timer beeped before my word was spoken often.

My oldest daughter said it was fun hearing what everyone's answers are. Her sister shared "it is fast paced and makes you think." My son enjoyed pushing the buttons.

These games are joining other USAopoly favorites on our family game shelf. (They make Scrabble, Cranium, and Jenga, too.) If you need to add more laughter in your life, I recommend Wonky. If you want to work on beating a timer in a much more fun way than math drills, try out Tapple. Our family had so much fun playing both of these USAopoly games. Daniel Boone Unit Study, A Schoolhouse Crew Review

We had the chance to review Daniel Boone: Frontiersman from the Heroes of History series by YWAM Publishing including both the book and the Unit Study Curriculum Guide

We began this book as a read-aloud with me reading to everyone in the van, but my son soon was far ahead of us as he read more and more on his own. He enjoyed reading this paperback book, and picked it up to read often. It is a book with relatable examples from this hero's life without painting a perfect picture.

We temporarily misplaced the Heroes of History Daniel Boone book and attempted to replace it with a library book so he could continue the study until we returned to the 4H building, but that change quickly revealed to us the superior quality of our book from YWAM Publishing. My son said (of the library book) "It just started with him out in the wilderness and didn't even say anything about his childhood." He was ready to return to 4H and reclaim the book that he left in their meeting room! He said that the YWAM Daniel Boone book "told the whole story." Janet and Geoff Benge's 215 page book covers the entire life of Daniel Boone. A video author interview is included in the curriculum guide.

The Unit Study Curriculum Guide was provided as a CD, but those are being phased out. All of their unit study guides are available as downloads from the YWAM website. This was multifaceted covering geography, social studies, language arts, music, Bible study, and more. Hands on activities made it more fun for my son, though there are essay options, too. Though my son read the book independently, we worked through the lessons in the curriculum guide together. I easily opened it on my Windows computer, and my son read, watched, and discussed it with me instead of writing.

I want to share heroes with my eleven year old son, for him to see men of character. To have heroes who have devoted their lives to God provides such a better foundation for him than cartoon superheroes. This book did that and makes me want to read more like it. Other titles include Ronald Reagan, Christopher Columbus, Abraham Lincoln, Davy Crockett, Billy Graham, John Adams, Theodore Rosevelt, William Wilberforce, Clara Barton, William Penn, Meriwether Lewis, and many more heroes from history. Missionary stories and heroes in the Christian heroes then & now series feature George Müller, Amy Carmichael, C. S. Lewis, Corrie Ten Boom, Gladys Aylward, Hudson Taylor, Jim Elliot,  Bethany Hamilton, and many more.

This was a very well written and enjoyable story. We have enjoyed books by YWAM publishing in the past, and we want to read more of these historical biographies and missionary studies. The study guide was like icing on the already delicious cake; it added to my son's understanding. They also offering books which I want to try out.

The Virtual Refrigerator

Welcome to the Virtual Refrigerator. Kym, Chareen, and I are sharing artist studies for a few months. Last month Kym shared about several artists that were new to me. Read about Piet MondrianGustav Klimt, M.C. Escher, and Picasso. My kids and I have been learning about Eric Carle's unique style.

Simplified, he paints tissue paper then makes a collage with cut colored paper. Our trials were fun to create though not as vibrant as the ones in his books.

This week, I'm sharing a few links I discovered while researching Eric Carle.

Museum (My favorites are his butterfly and peacock.)

Tutorial from the artist

Stinky Kid Math, a Schoolhouse Crew Review

Stinky Kid Math Review

Stinky Kid Math first captured my attention because of the name. If I could change a child's dislike of math with humor, then just maybe that could help them actually ease toward the opposite end of the spectrum and actually like math. A mom can always hope! Stinky Kid Math has shared online access to their entire subscription website.

In addition to algebra (foundational and complex) and geometry, Stinky Kid Math also offers a math games section. The math games are where I chose to focus with my son. We tried accessing the online program from several computers and found that the level of parental controls we had set up on my son's laptop actually interfered with the video lessons and games. Before I realized the issue was on my end, customer support assisted me and then even suggested a way to work with our settings. We ended up primarily accessing the games on my computer and the video portions of the program through the iPad which made it easy for me to watch with my son.

The website is easy to navigate. Options are listed in boxes which show expanded lists of videos when clicked. Videos or games can be selected.

Math games were the first thing that I tried with my son. The Math-A-Mole game focuses on graphing skills (one of my son's math streghths) while dynamiting moles on a golf course. He was more interested in the games, but the geometry and algebra videos were short and engaging enough to also capture his attention. Geometry Runner involves geometric shapes.

My son started the videos at the foundational algebra level. Clicking the foundational algebra button opened up a page showing each of the main topics covered. He is currently learning basic operations. Clicking that square revealed links to all related videos as well as specific chapters in online/downloadable books, worksheets, and which games corresponded to those lessons.

When signed in, an activity log shows which videos have been viewed and which games have been played and for how long. Math help progresses from pre-algebra skills through advanced algebra and geometry. Precursers to algebra which make understanding algebra easier are also covered including fractions, decimals, and percentages. Stinky Kid Math is like an online math tutor.

Another component to this program is worksheets with answer sheets and pdf downloads of each lesson. Tips were provided to help students make the most of their lessons including decreasing distractions and taking notes like they would in an actual classroom lecture.

Even my senior benefited from Stinky Kid Math. As the videos are listed by topic as well as subject, she was able to choose specific lessons to review. Videos cover overviews of each subject as well as specific math skills. She found that instead of long in depth lessons, each topic was broken down into multiple videos, and music as well as the presentation made it fun. The videos are typically just 4-5 minutes each.

I recommend Stinky Kid Math as a way to enhance your middle school and high school homeschool math lessons, both as a step by step tutorial and as a review of specific topics. There are over three hundred video lessons included!

Scripture and a Snapshot

Late tonight I realized that I didn't have a picture to share with you this week. The girls have been sewing a lot lately, and most of my recent pictures are either of our laser projects or their sewing projects. They both finished sewing skirts this week, but these pictures are from almost exactly a month ago. We meet with a dear group of ladies monthly to learn hand sewing techniques, our modern day designated "time for sewing." I love Ecclestiastes,  most of all the ending truth: "Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." Ecclestiastes 3:7 better fits these pictures, though. And I've been relearning the difficule lesson this week of "a time to be silent."
"...a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,"

Last week we began imitating Eric Carle by cutting painted paper into squares. This week, some of those squares were turned into this butterfly.

What is your favorite of Eric Carle's books?

Lessons When Home Businesses Overlap With High School

Direct links to our business websites are included in this post.
Our homeschool has changed over time. As the kids needs and interests have changed, our lessons have changed. One consistent thing through the years has been what some call real life homeschooling.  We have merged some lessons from our home businesses with school lessons. Several Homeschool Blogging Connections friends are sharing their "Out of the Box" homeschooling stories, too.

Almost four years ago, my daughters requested ideas for income. We decided that Lilla Rose would be a good fit as the flexi-clip is a product we all already used and shared. The girls came up with the money for the "party kit" and this business has been as much theirs as mine since we first started. https://www.lillarose.biz/prettyhair is our website assigned by the company the day we signed up as an independent consultant. This business has naturally fit into their homeschool lessons. We signed up hoping it would provide a little extra spending money. It has also provided hands on business lessons, practical math, and fun times with my girls. One daughter shared "I love Flexi clips! I've gotten to help with the book keeping, setup for shows, and much more." This is so much more than the girls experimenting with new hairstyles, though I still enjoy seeing that, too. Below, Emily is using our mini you-pins in a half-up style.

Hal and Melanie Young shared with us about including children in a family business. "Welcome older children into business discussions" was advised. The responsibility even given to younger children can help them realize that their contribution makes a difference.

Another business that has directly influenced our homeschool is Cuts By Laser which is my parents' laser cutting and etching business. They have included all of us in their business giving us the freedom to create and try new things. Last year even my 11 year old son (then 10) designed a Christmas ornament. I've encouraged him to make creating a new one a yearly goal.

Jelly Fish Designs is her own line of laser cut products featuring doll sized weaving looms and miniatures.

The business has influenced our decisions about additional classes, too. Wanting to learn applicable graphic art skills, over the summer my senior took an intensive Gimp class from Landry academy. She is constantly teaching the rest of us new skills we can apply to the designing process.

My daughter summed it up: "Our family business is fun. :-) One of my favorite things is being able to go through the entire process of creating something of my own. With a laser we go through the whole process of planning, designing, cutting, advertising, and selling our products. This often includes long days at the shop and spur of the moment trips to cut something in the middle of the night. There is so much to learn with a laser, so it is fun when we learn something new and exciting! The simplest things make the many steps we go through easier. I also enjoy learning about all that we can create with the the laser." Doll shawl woven on a loom she designed and built:

Scripture and a Snapshot

24 “The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
26 The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
And give you peace.”’

Numbers 6:24-26

We have been celebrating my daughter's birthday. Before she was born, my mom gave me a CD called Gentle Blessings that included these verses as a song. I still pray these (and many other) verses for her. I still remember rocking her as a newborn, listening to that song.

Happy birthday, dear Heather!
