Model Train: an ongoing Father-Son Project

Join in the fun with us in this virtual book club for kids with Poppin's Book Nook. Each month there is a new theme including "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" for April.

The restaurant where we had our wedding rehearsal dinner years ago had a model train that ran on a track all around the dining room close to the ceiling. My husband has always wanted one, and last year my son got a starter set for Christmas. This has been an ongoing project for my son and his daddy, so I knew it would be perfect to include in this month's Poppin's book nook post.

My son read the Train (DK Eyewitness Books)  from cover to cover the first day that he brought it home from the library. He enthusiastically shared with us about the "Up in the air" chapter which reminded me of roller coasters. History of trains and railroads as well as the different types of trains is explained. I enjoyed the historical pictures of the kettle heated with a kerosene burner for coffee or tea and the pictures of royal trains. There is even a section about model trains.

Joseph's first project after putting the model kit together was building mountains with tunnels for his track to run through. This turned out much better than the plaster globe that we tried a few years ago.

He saved and bought the Woodland Station which he painted and assembled.

My original plan with this post was to share books likeThe Railway Children (free on Amazon)which we bought from a friend then enjoyed as a read-aloud or the Boxcar ChildrenThe Boxcar Children Mysteries which all three of my kids enjoyed. Instead, when I asked Joseph about train books he handed me theBeginners Guide to HO Model Railroading which he has been reading for ideas for his own train.
