The Logic of English: Cursive handwriting (a TOS Schoolhouse Crew Review)

The following is a review of Cursive Handwriting by The Logic of English, a TOS Schoolhouse Crew Review.

We were given a choice of cursive or manuscript, and I chose to review the Cursive Handwriting from The Logic of English. The Rhythm of Handwriting included a student workbook (currently available for $15.00) and laminated handwriting chart reference sheet (10.00.) Students needed a pencil or pen which could be used in the workbook. I chose to also incorporate a white board for demonstration and practice. Their tactile cards were also recommended to use with the program. There is no separate teacher's guide.

If I were to actually see a video of this style demonstrated, I might be more likely to follow their exact recommendations. As it is, there are 19 different movement patterns used for letter formation with this method. I recommend to parents, whatever descriptors you use as you teach your child to write, be consistent. So, if you follow the rhythm words, then continue to use them. I used this with my 4th grader who has recently learned cursive writing and my 8th grader at times to increase the beauty of her cursive letters. (As we had one workbook for the review, at times I had them write on ruled paper.) We completed all of the upper case and lower case letters, though for younger students it could be done at a much slower pace.

I demonstrated formation of each letter on a whiteboard, had my children air write the letters, and then they practiced writing them as demonstrated on paper or a dry-erase board.

Because of the detailed directions for each movement, it is possible that this would be easier to learn if consistently used from the time your child first begins cursive writing. Some of the instructions for the rhythm movements were identical to other handwriting programs, while others were completely original. Most were extremely verbose, and I often simplified the instructions.

Addendum: The cover is changing. The lower price mentioned in the review is for the older cover (like I received) until they sell out.

  1. I wonder if this would help my boy learn proper formation of letters?
