Memorizing Scripture

At the end of each year I often read of challenges shared for the next year. 2010 was my first attempt at B90 and my first time to completely read the Bible through, though it took me several months more than the initial 90 days. In 2011 we worked on memorizing Colossians and joined Beth Moore's Siesta Scripture Memory challenge. 2012 was less structured except for the verses with the MFW curriculum and the Bible Bee over the spring and summer. Next year we are again joining the Siesta challenge as well as a new one shared by a friend on the Schoolhouse Review Crew.

Read more about it here.

My daughters and I enjoyed Beth Moore's challenge so much last time that we are doing it again. Some of the 100 verses may end up in our spirals for that challenge. She had some convicting words to share about choosing verses that WE need to learn and not just something that will address an issue with our children or someone else.
"We’re a really long line of women standing shoulder to shoulder with our swords drawn.
And we don't draw our swords to wound people, to convict our family members (God’s job)
or to cut off the ears of our hearers.
We draw our swords to fight the good fight of faith."

My girls adding verses to the huge wall of verses at the celebration conference in January-
it was covered front and back.

Read this article for more benefits of memorizing Scripture as well as some strategies.

Are you planning any new challenges for the new year? Do you have a program for Scripture memory for yourself our your kids?

  1. Both girls have memory work included with their curriculum. Helping them helps me. =o)

    1. I agree, as we recite them as a family, especially the verses as songs, it helps me, too.

  2. I am usually learning right along with my son when we work on his memory work.

  3. I like this idea. All of my kids learn verses through our AWANA program, but I don't regularly memorize Scripture even though I did as a kid.

  4. I've been looking into the Siestas challenge too. I wish the conference was closer to us! Would LOVE to go to that with my daughters! So glad you are joining in the 100 Verses! I would love to chat with you about a Lila Rose prize for our giveaways. Send me an email at csclark626@yahoo.com if you are still interested!
