Baked Apple Dumpling

Our food when we vacation is a bit more indulgent than our everyday fare. Maybe you remember this glimpse of some of our camping treats. Typically in the fall we visit Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. One of our favorite treats there is their apple dumplin' with a side of cinnamon ice cream, topped with caramel sauce. Tonight we attempted duplicating it at home.

Ingredients:
prepared (or homemade) pie crust
apples
sucanat
butter
cinnamon

     Peel and core apples.
We wanted to make 10 so we cut each pie crust into 5 equal wedges. You could do more or less easily, adjusting as needed. Roll pie crust flat.
Place peeled and cored apple on pie crust.
Spoon ~ 1 tablespoon sucanat and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon into the center of each apple.
Add 1/2 teaspoon butter, but be sure not to press down on the apple or it will make a hole in the crust.
Wrap crust around apple, sealing all seams. We fit 8 in our stoneware baking dish which we used uncovered.
Two more fit in a small pan for Powpow- his reduced sugar version was also declared delicious.
Bake at 350 degrees ~30 minutes, until golden brown.
Serve with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.
Success! These disappeared quickly.

  8. Hi Jennifer, I just clicked over from Katie's Thursday Favorite Things...could not resist checking out your amazing, and delicious apple dumplings. The aroma is so inviting with the cinnamon sugar, and since I make my own pie crust, this would be so perfect to use it with homemade crust. Love it, and I thank you for sharing!
