Through the Fire

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

The kids joined me with the intention of helping out friends. Or so I thought. What was intended as an afternoon of blessing them turned instead into an amazing opportunity to hear how they have been blessed.Walking through the ashes of what had been their home reminded me of walking through the shell of my brother-in-law and sister-in-law's home after hurricane Katrina. Loss. Fire destroyed one end of their home, the other end was made unlivable by smoke and water.

I walked through the ashes sad for their loss and memories of a different but eerily similar situation. Then when I walked further into the house where an almost complete wall was still standing, joy and hope greeted me.

My friend's husband painted those words that morning. Throughout the afternoon he shared about God's protection and even restoration. He shared how his daughter carried his napping son out of their bedroom as it filled with smoke and laid him down safely outside, still sleeping. Safe. Their whole family is safe. He shared how God was providing through families and friends and organizations they are a part of. The smiles of true joy on this couple's face as they worked to clean what could be salvaged were more encouraging than they know.

What is truly important to you? I wonder if my attitude would be anything like theirs in a similar situation.

"Fear not, for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour." (Is. 43:1-3)

  2. What an inspiring story! I pray that they have good insurance!

Would you react like that? Would I? It's hard to tell, but God gives people what they need at the time, not ahead of time.
