Nichole Nordeman: The Unmaking CD

A week ago was the 10 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. My Facebook feed was filled with stories, both of hurt and loss and of faith and rebuilding. One that I keep reflecting on was a picture that a friend shared of a pair of scissors wedged by a board where a house had been before the storm. Our first house after my husband and I got married was on that street. Every house on that street was washed away. My friend shared that a few days before the hurricane, he and his wife had argued over those scissors. Simple things can get blown out of proportion so easily. They can also quickly be put in perspective when viewed in contrast with bigger events. Who didn't put the scissors away correctly no longer mattered when the whole house was gone.

With the hurricane on my mind, the first two songs in Nichole Nordeman's newest CD had me crying. In The Unmaking, she asks "What happens now when all I've made is torn down?" But then the song turns from brokenness to knowing losing is not a hopeless end. The second song Not To Us features Plumb. It continues the theme "Let us not imagine that we might have a hand in where the wind blows." Let everything point to God. "Every loss, every gain, every breath..."

The last of the six songs on this CD again invoked tears. I first heard the preview before receiving the cd and cried then, too. My firstborn just turned 18. The song Slow Down is sung as if a mom is speaking to a child. "Slow down...I pointed to the sky and now you want to fly." It's hard to watch when they don't seem to slow down.

About the new album The Unmaking:
"Before things in our lives can be resurrected and given new life, certain things must die.  Before beauty blooms in spring, roots must do the hard work under the hard frozen soil of winter.  Before you renovate and re-build, you tear down the parts of the structure that are weak or damaged or dangerous.  Before we make, we must unmake."  Nichole Nordeman

  3. Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;
    praise his holy name.
    For his anger lasts only a moment,
    but his favor lasts a lifetime;
    weeping may stay for the night,
    but rejoicing comes in the morning.
    Psalm 30:4-5
