The following is a review for Doorposts through the Schoolhouse Review Crew.
Beauty in the Heart: A Study of Godly Beauty for Young Women by Pam Forster is designed for girls 10 an older to both understand beauty and learn how to study the Bible. This is not a lesson on hairstyles and manicures. Instead it shares important truths about true beauty.
My 14 year old daughter has been using this study and is planning to continue for several more months. She shared: "I like the way the Bible study is planned. First you read the Scripture passage. The author asks questions that you look up in a study Bible or atlas so you can get a better feel for what was happening then and why the letter was written. And then the next few days that book/letter in the bible is explained more so that you understand it deeper. I like how it doesn't take too long, maybe 15-20 minutes each day. In the beginning I learned about Peter. Women from the Bible such as Ruth are used in the study as examples of Godly character and beauty. Esther and Sarah are also discussed."
She learned to ask "who, what, where, why, when, and how" when reading verses as a way to gain a deeper understanding. Multiple colors of highlighters were used with to further distinguish those components (who, what when, why, where, how) as they study. At the beginning of each 6 day unit, an overview is provided of what will be covered. The additional Resources are listed there, too. Some of these include a historical atlas, concordance, and colored pencils. Specific books are recommended, but it worked well with ones that we already had on our shelves. Optional online tools are also suggested.
Doorposts also publishes other books for children and parents. In addition to this Beauty in the Heart book, other Schoolhouse Crew reviewers also reviewed Because You are Strong: A Study of Godly Strength for Young Men. (Resources are also shared in the back of the book we received to use with training young men about true beauty.) Our family has also used other Doorposts books including Plants Grown Up and For Instruction in Righteousness.
