The Art of Frozen Yogurt ~ A Simple Recipe for a Favorite Summertime Treat

frozen yogurt recipe

One of our family's favorite treats is frozen yogurt. The self serve walls full of soft serve yogurt machines seem to be popping up everywhere now.

Everyone in our family has our personal favorites. My oldest daughter likes chocolate and cheesecake flavored yogurt. I like fresh fruit as a topping on almost any fruit flavor. My son likes to pile on the toppings. As convenient and delicious as those places are, it does not compare to homemade.

This recipe could not be more simple. Combine equal parts of any flavored yogurt with your favorite fruit.

If your fruit is already frozen, blend equal parts frozen fruit and yogurt until creamy. Done. Simple, right? (By the way, that is one reason I wash blueberries before freezing them.) If you make more of this than you need, it stores perfectly in a sealed container in the freezer. Soften it up a few minutes and then it can be scooped like ice cream.

  • frozen strawberries + strawberry yogurt = strawberries and cream
  • frozen peaches and pineapple + coconut yogurt = tropical delight
  • frozen banana + chocolate yogurt = creamy chocolate banana
We also make a delicious chocolate banana version without yogurt. Simply mix frozen banana slices, cocoa powder, and as much milk as needed to blend smoothly in the blender.

For smoothies instead of thick frozen treat, add more liquid to the blender. Milk, kefir, fruit juice, and even flavored water can all be added to the blender for a refreshing drinkable treat.

Of course, if you have fresh fruit that isn't frozen, there is a way to make it work, too. Mix equal parts yogurt and finely chopped or pureed fruit in an ice cream machine. This isn't quite as fast but is equally delicious.

Doctor it up a bit!

For a creamier version of peach yogurt, I mixed vanilla yogurt and chopped peaches (the ones on the plate, not the whole measuring cup that you see,) peach juice, and about 1/4 cup of coconut milk. If you aren't planning to serve all of it, keep the yogurt container to freeze whatever you don't use immediately. Served over more chopped peaches it was delicious!

What is your favorite flavor of frozen yogurt? We have even tried making a chocolate version with chocolate syrup, vanilla yogurt, and milk in the ice cream maker. The possibilities are unlimited.
