Schoolhouse Crew Review of Art Ditto by Birdcage Press

We are a game playing family, so the opportunity to review a game by Birdcage Press was welcomed. When I first saw Art Ditto, I made the association between their museum quality art cards and Charlotte Mason's style of teaching. As I studied Charlotte Mason’s recommendations I found it interesting that she encouraged letting each child have their own small reproductions of art by the artist being studied. Since reading that several years ago, I have collected calendars with works by artists including Monet and found printable resources online. Art Ditto has provided our homeschool with the first child sized reproductions made specifically for kids to handle. Don't let "museum quality" make you think they are just for looking at. My closest comparison for the feel of these cards is board books. They are much thicker than laminated paper, but have that plastic like (think-- protection from spills) protective cover like that of something laminated. And there are three of each one, so for that CM purpose each of my kiddos could have their own!

I like game pieces kept in boxes, though, so we can actually play the game when we want to. So my daughter used the cards for art then put them back into the box.

My daughter who drew the pictures above shared her opinion of this game. "Art ditto is a fun matching game that uses many different artistic pictures. It came with Artist cards and matching cards. The Artist cards show three different pictures of painted or drawn pictures. The cards give you a closeup view of the picture and on the other side the whole image. There are two matching cards for each picture. To play the game each player chooses an equal amount of game picture cards. All of the matching cards are shuffled and laid face down. The first player starts by turning two cards over and seeing if they match. If they don't the player then turns the two cards back over. If they get two matching cards they then pick them up. If the two matching card were the same as one on there artist cards they got to keep them both. If the cards matched a picture on another persons card they had to give one of the matching cards to the player who's picture matched it. I thought that this game was fun and the artwork was pretty even though the game was intended for younger kids."

Younger kids, yes, it is recommended for ages 4 and up. That up part, though, is limited only by the one playing. This award winning game is available for $24.95.

We did also play it as recommended quite a few times. And we changed the rules up and played our own versions of the game, too. It is presented as a memory game, but there are so many more features to it than just remembering where pictures are and matching them.

  2. I don't think I have ever seen a game that revolves around art. Interesting. We love games too!! Such fun family time unless the kids start "talking" so loud I feel like they are yelling at each other. I LOVE your daughter's drawings!!

  4. I love the idea of children being exposed to art through a game. We really enjoy games (and anything hands-on, for that matter!) here. I didn't review this, so I was glad to read yours. Your daughter's drawings are beautiful! Have a great weekend. Many blessings, Lisa
