Reading with my Nine Year Old Son

Affiliate links are included in this post.

This is current now, but what my kids read changes as fast as what I read. We make frequent trips to the library as well as read a lot of eBooks  For now, this is a summary of what my nine year old son enjoys reading.

Imagination Station is his favorite series of books. He just received the most five most recently released in the series for his birthday.

Sometimes, we still read books that were his favorites when he was younger. All of my kids loved to hear "Boom,Shacka-Lacka-Lacka,Boom,Shacka-lack" repeated and still say it with me as I read Cadillac together. The cadence is catchy and we all laugh out loud every time. We enjoyed Beatrix Potter's classic Peter Rabbit this week, too.

He has repeatedly checked out The Adventures of Tintin books from our library. I remember reading some comics when I was younger, but his level of interest in them is much higher than mine ever was. These stories are mysteries about a mischievous little boy and his dog. His other library selection last week was The Strange Case of Origami Yoda. His sister helped him make his own.

My guy is enthralled with all things Lego related. Star Wars Legos are his favorite, and that was featured in the most recent Lego magazine. You can click the Lego link at the bottom of this post and sign up to receive it for free as a Lego Club member! He looks forward to finding that in the mailbox and reads each issue cover to cover. His favorite Lego book is The LEGO Ideas Book.

My son likes to talk, and he enjoys reading out loud to the rest of us. When we have a history or science lesson that reads like a story, the kids take turns reading aloud. A friend recently recommended Five Children and It E. Nesbit, and I was delighted to find it as a Kindle freebie, and Joseph has started reading it to me. I have the Kindle reader on both my laptop and my iPad. I found a big selection by this author available free on Amazon including The Railway Children which we read it our loud as a family last summer.

All of The Chronicles of Narnia books are family favorites. We actually have that whole set of audio books too, and they are wonderful. They are dramatized with sound effects and different actors reading for each of the characters which makes it more like listening to a movie. We love Lamplighter audio books, too.

Disclaimer: Most of the books mentioned in this post are hyperlinked to Amazon and include my affiliate link. Over the past 4 years I've accumulated a total of .40 cents in my account through Amazon links. It is not a money maker for my blog, but if you do click a link then make a purchase on Amazon there is a chance that I could earn a percentage. I'm disclosing this as required by the FTC.

  1. I'm not familiar with most of those books but then my oldest boy is only 2 so we haven't got there yet. I'll keep Imagination Station in mind for when the time comes.

  7. I haven't heard of Imagination Station. Our oldest son is 7 and isn't reading yet, but it sounds like something he would enjoy when he is reading, so I'll have to check it out!
