Penny Ball ~ Add Copper To Your Flower Bed

Did you know that the only difference in pink and blue hydrangeas is the soil? You can actually change their color by changing the ph of the soil. I love the vibrant blue ones, so I made a penny ball to enhance that. Actually I made three. Daddy welded some rounded pieces for the first one, then we made two more out of bowling balls.

After searching thrift shops for bowling balls to no avail, I followed my son's advice and asked at the bowling alley. The owner said not only do they give the old balls away, but someone had even made him a penny ball!

Our hydrangeas one each side of our front porch steps are some of my favorite flowers. Two years ago they didn't bloom because after their beautiful display the year before I pruned them. Wrong. Way too much.

But last year they were full of bright blue blooms again. Beautiful!

That was my Mother's Day gift to my mom last year, too. This year our hydrangea blossoms are just beginning to fill out but are still all green. For more information on changing the color of your blooms, read Southern Living's advice.

  1. Beautiful! I love hydrangeas. My mother bought me one for my birthday last year and I thought I had killed it, but it's growing back this year. There aren't any blooms yet, but I'm just happy it's alive! I love the blue blossoms, too! Tina @ Mamas Like Me

  2. So how do you make it? Just glue pennies onto it?

    1. Exactly! It took about 350 pennies, and we tried a lot of different glues. The ones done with hot glue broke off later. The best type that lasted was E600. http://amzn.to/13zoEWW (affiliate link)

  8. You always have such creative ideas! Love this one too. Now if I can just think of a way to keep my little ones (and possibly big ones) from picking off the pennies and stuffing them in their piggy banks . . . :)

To keep hydrangeas blue they need aluminum not copper

    1. Thanks for that insight. I have researched it a bit and learned that our modern pennies do contain a lot of aluminum.
