Book review: For You They Signed

As a student, the only time I remember enjoying history was a college class where the professor told it like a story. It was interesting, but I still didn’t make an A in his class. I want my kids to have a love of learning, even the things that are not my favorites. My first glimpse of For You They Signed by Marilyn Boyer was in another review (I want to link back to that convincing review but now can't find it.) I wanted to read it so ordered a copy then received a copy to review! I shared the extra copy with my Daddy, who is a history buff.  For the past few months I have been using this as a read aloud history story book with my children. Joseph wants to continue. Heather is also enjoying the interesting facts about the people who signed the Declaration of Independence.

Excerpts from historical documents pepper the 400 pages, at times the language is difficult to read but the original version adds to the authenticity of the book. "Faith of our Fathers" has a new meaning after reading this book. This is a history book of a pivotal time in our nation, and it is also "a years worth of character studies."

From the publisher:

In 1776, 56 men signed their names on a document that they knew might well mean their certain deaths as traitors to England. Standing on principles of faith and liberty, these men forged a powerful call for freedom and human dignity still resonating today in America. Yet, historical revisionists have distorted or attempted to wipe away every trace of this nation`s Christian heritage, including the heartfelt faith of these founding fathers.
More than simply facts and figures, For You They Signed provides an abundance of resources within one volume, including: a full year of life-changing, challenging family or group devotional character studies, over 90 illustrations, biographical summaries, and insightful quotes, character quality definitions, Patrick Henry`s speech delivered to the signers, the Christian nature of state constitutions, and the Christian nature of America`s universities.
The Declaration of Independence remains one of history`s most enduring achievements, and this text will help you value those freedoms these men fought for in an insightfully fresh way. It will also assist you in catching the God-given vision of these faithful new Americans, igniting a fire for your family, community, and the generations to come. Here is a volume that should be found in every private and public library in America...a meticulously documented look back to the true birth of our nation.
They pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor so we could be free!
Endorsed by Christian historian, David Barton of Wallbuilders!  Teach your family history, character and Scripture at the same time. This beautiful volume gives you the tools you need to train up young nation-changers.
A free 180 pg. e-book is available with purchase of For You They Signed. It contains coloring pages of the signers, and famiy fun quizzes to help retain information learned.

Disclaimer: New Leaf Publishing provided me with a copy of this book for the purpose of this review.

  2. How fun to order it and then get it to review! I've done that too. :)

We love this book. Connor is doing American History this year, and I haven't figured out exactly how I'm incorporating this book into his life, but I will be.

I'm guessing we'll just spread it out over the entire year. I can't see condensing it into the applicable time period! This whole book in a couple of months sounds a bit overwhelming.

  3. Catherine, please let me know if you find them.

Debra, we read about one person each week so it isn't overwhelming. The many differences then and now interest me- that so many politicians started out in seminary, things like that especially.

  4. I haven't seen this book, but will agree that stories bringing history alive is a far better way to learn than some of the standard textbooks.

  7. I hated history as a student and love to make it more "real" for my kids. Thanks for sharing about this book. I may go order it now.
